Short answer
Inspect the shelter entrance and its prompt. Players describe foliage-covered, boarded and exposed variants. Clearing the obstruction and opening the lock are separate tasks; some reported locks accept bolt cutters but not escape keys.
Reviewed September 14, 2026. These variants are described in a community escape discussion and its replies. Reports disagree on shelter counts, so no fixed count or capacity is claimed here.
Read the entrance in two stages
| What you see | Reported behavior | Your next check |
|---|---|---|
| Foliage | Players describe removing it before unlocking. | Clear the covering, then read the remaining interaction. |
| Boards | Players describe breaking the obstruction with a suitable weapon or tool. | Inspect the lock after the boards are gone; do not assume the entrance is ready. |
| Exposed lock | Some replies describe a bolt-cutter-only variant. | Use the tool requested by this entrance rather than relying on an escape key universally. |
Why will my escape key not work?
- Check whether a covering remains.A visible shelter is not necessarily ready for the lock interaction. Identify whether the prompt refers to an obstruction or a lock.
- Read the required tool.If it asks for bolt cutters, tell your team that exact requirement. Repeatedly trying the same key will not help identify the missing step.
- Separate a mismatch from a possible bug.If the requested tool is present but the interaction still fails, note the prompt, platform and build. That is more useful than assuming all keys or all shelters are broken.
Prepare the resident route before using the entrance
Our suggested team check: identify who is still escorting residents, confirm the entrance is usable, and communicate the nearest recognizable landmark. A completed escape interaction and the rescue of everyone you intended to help are separate things to check.
If this entrance cannot be opened with your available equipment, compare it with a sedan escape or return to the escape route overview. No route is guaranteed safe simply because its lock is open.
Storm shelter FAQ
Does every storm cellar accept an escape key?
No universal rule is established. Community replies describe entrances that need bolt cutters and do not accept a key. Read the current prompt.
How many shelters are on each map?
The reports checked disagree. This guide does not give a fixed number; plan around entrances found in your current match.
Where should I start looking?
A Steam player reports a cellar behind a shed near the water tower on Haddonfield Heights. It is a possible location, not a guaranteed spawn. See the location guide for source links and other leads.
